What Is a Publishing Deal?
And Do I Really Need One?

Beginning of the End for the Old-Time Record Store Fan

By Mark Saxon, East Coast Project Manager

Virgin Records in NYC

The Times Square Virgin Megastore in New York, which is the highest volume music store in the U.S., will shut down in April, according to a story in a recent Billboard article.

The article cites real-estate problems as the cause, stating that Virgin is paying far less per square foot than the real estate is worth.

The closure would leave the Virgin chain with just five stores, and the status of another of its' stores, also in New York, may also be in jeopardy.

Monday, June 1, 6 to 8 p.m.
PeerCritique (Nashville)
Nashville SGA Office
SGA Members-Free and Non-members $10
Reservations Required
Special guest Lorna Flowers

Unlike our ProCritique sessions, where members generally bring in their songs completed and mixed to be played and critiqued by publishers and other industry professionals, our PeerCritique gives the writer a chance to bring in unfinished material, in rough form, to get evaluations by other songwriters before they spend a lot of time and money to produce their demos. Often, after someone has spent their resources completing a demo of a song they’ve written, they are naturally not as open to making changes in their songs, which can be costly and time-consuming. In an unfinished state, members can get opinions from other members on what might be done to improve a song lyrically, musically, production-wise, etc., before they’ve committed it to final mastering.

On June 1, songwriter Lorna Flowers will be joining us to also offer her feedback on songs, too! Lorna has had success with cuts in Europe, runs her own production company, and writes with a lot of other big Nashville songwriters and is securing cuts! Lorna will be able to bring a professional and advanced perspective to this evening’s peer session! Thanks, Lorna!

There are only 10 slots available, so songwriters wishing to participate must call our Nashville office as soon as possible at 615-742-9945 or email Kimberly at nash@songwritersguild.com to reserve a spot for the event. Bring one song, your CD or instrument, and 10 typed lyric sheets. The PeerCritique will be held at our Nashville office, at 209 10th Avenue South, Suite 321. Current SGA members may attend for free. For the PeerCritique on June 1, non-members may participate for a fee of $10. Reservations required.

Monday, June 8, 5:30 p.m.
ProCritique Session (Nashville)
Nashville SGA Office (SGA Members Only)

Join us for our next ProCritique session Monday, June 8 at 5:30 p.m. Pro guest to be announced!

The ProCritique is open to current SGA members only. Reservations are required. Call 615-742-9945. Limited space is available. Reservations begin on May 26. The critique session will be held at the Nashville SGA office, located on the third floor of Cummins Station in suite 321.

Members not attending in person may submit a song to the Nashville SGA office no later than noon on the day of the session. Reservations are still required!

The submission must include:
· A single song on a CD
· A typed lyric sheet
· Workshop release form (if one hasn’t already been submitted for 2009)
· Name, phone number, email address and MEMBER NUMBER must be included on both the CD and the lyric sheet (please note that the member number is a new requirement)
· Write “June ProCritque” on the outside of the envelope so it is filed correctly

Critique evaluations will only be returned via email. CDs will NOT be returned or saved. Submitted songs will not be critiqued if a workshop release form is not on file and submission instructions are not followed.

Mail your song submission to: SGA, Attn: Kimberly Maiers Shaw, 209 10th Avenue South, Suite 321, Nashville, TN 37203. Email nash@songwritersguild.com for a release form or if you have any additional questions.

Tuesday, June 9, 6 to 8 p.m.
Peer Critique (New York)
Free to SGA members (reservation required)

Unlike our ProCritique, where members generally bring in their songs completed and mixed to be played and critique’d by publishers and other industry professionals, our PeerCritique gives the writer a chance to bring in unfinished material, in rough form, to get evaluations by other Guild members before they spend a lot of time and money to produce their demos.

There are only 12 slots available for each meeting, so songwriters wishing to attend must call our NY office ASAP at (212) 768-7902 to reserve a spot for the event. Please call between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m to reserve your spot. Bring one song, on CD, and 14 typed lyric sheets. The PeerCritique will be held at our NY office, at 1560 Broadway, Suite 408 (entrance on 46th Street). The PeerCritique is open to current SGA members only.

With their expert knowledge and guidance, Tommy Faragher and Mark Saxon will help bring your song ideas to fruition in this four week course, spending the first part of the workshop on the development and nurturing of your song idea. Throughout the workshop we will be refining and polishing your song to bring it to its ultimate potential. The last part of the workshop will be learning to prepare for a live presentation of your material.

After final preparation, a live showcase night at a local club will take place, where we will all have a chance to hear the results of our hard work. Your peers or other musicians may accompany you as you perform your own song. If singing isn't your forte, we will provide a vocalist to perform your song.

Every songwriter needs to get to this point, and through this workshop we cut to the chase.
