“Still 21 In My Head” is the signature song of singer-songwriter Margaret MacDonald’s new album, Rain on the Roof, due for release this month—a song that is sure to resonate with the over-35 music-loving public. “Since I myself am over 35, I can’t help but write music that appeals to this audience,” says Margaret. “Did you know that according to Billboard, 49% of all record sales are by people over the age of 35? So I figure there’s room for some new, more mature talent.”

Rain on the Roof is a collection of eleven original songs with Margaret performing vocals and piano, and features some amazing local talent: Basil Fung on guitar (Alanis Morrisette’s Jagged Little Pill) and Charles Waltz (fiddler for the Young Dubliners). Her collaboration with LA-based producer Randall Michael Tobin at Theta Sound has resulted in an album with wide appeal to audiences who listen to the likes of Joni Mitchell, Sarah McLachlan, Carole King and Norah Jones.

Margaret grew up in San Francisco listening to everything from classical music to R&B to folk, then spent 15 years in the United Kingdom, and her songwriting reflects all of these elements. Her songs sparkle both musically and lyrically, a rare feat these days. It’s music for when you have time to really listen. And the subject matter isn’t confined to relationship-themed songs: she also deals with grief (Cry For You), the emotions of having a child (Child), and of coming home after a long time away (All I Want Now, Homecoming).

SGA's Platinum Member Margaret MacDonald

Platinum songwriter and recording artist Harriet Schock says, "Hearing Margaret MacDonald play the piano and sing her songs, I immediately feel transported to a place where every note is what I want it to be and where lyrics deliver the emotional impact the melodies deserve. This is exceptional talent combined with well honed craft."

The achingly beautiful, richly textured songwriting takes you from the fun James Taylor-esque style of “Still 21 In My Head” to the gut-wrenching “Cry For You” to the R&B smooth ballad, “I Know You Love Me.” The tones of Margaret’s voice are pure and warm, not over-stretched; in other words, perfect for her genre.

As excited as she is about the new release, Margaret is realistic about her prospects of getting signed by a major label. “They want to see lots of fans and buzz generated from touring gigs before they’ll even go near you,” she says. Building a large fan base by touring just isn’t feasible at this stage in her life (she’s also the mother of two high-schoolers). Instead, she is concentrating her marketing efforts through the Internet, both in CD/digital sales and the licensing of her songs for use in television, film and advertising.
