SGA well-represented at New York Music Functions

New York has been a hotbed of activity for the music industry lately, and the Songwriters Guild has had plenty of representation at the industry functions from both the New York and Nashville offices.

Among the Songwriters Guild guests at various functions throughout the city were SGA President Rick Carnes, Outside Counsel to the Guild Charles Sanders, Songwriters Guild of America Foundationís East Coast Project Manager Mark Saxon, SGA Board member Janie Ross Coulter and Senior Manager of our SGA Catalogue Administration Program Sam Fein. First up was the 2008 National Music Councilís American Eagle Awards, honoring Lorin Maazel and Tom Chapin.

Another event we attended was the National Music Publishers Association annual meeting, where we were treated to a trio of songs by Evanescenceís Amy Lee (shown here with Rick Carnes, SGA President).

Closely following that was the World Hunger Year-Chapin Awards dinner at Chelsea Piers honoring Elvis Costello, Sen. John Edwards, the National Farm Ministry and WCBS Newsradio 880. Costello and Allen Toussaint played three songs and got three well-deserved standing ovations, and Senator Edwards gave an impassioned speech. Tom and Jen Chapin sounded great as always. In the audience was Phoebe Snow, Allison Krauss and Robert Plant (shown above with SGA President Rick Carnes), Jake Holmes, John Byner, and industry vets including Richard Gotterher.

We managed to fit in a few great SESAC events, a SESAC Music Awards show (also at the Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers), and then a new writers showcase that featured, among others, SGA member Kylie Edmond. We were impressed by the great music, both by industry veterans and also their emerging artists.

This was all topped off by the 2008 Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Awards Presentation. Inducted were Desmond Child, Albert Hammond, Loretta Lynn, Alan Menkin and John Sebastian. Special Awards went to Paul Anka, John Rzeznik, Anne Murray and Milt Okun. It was a great show, and we got to see some very special performances by John Sebastian and his old Loviní Spoonful band mate Steve Boone, as well as by Paul Anka, John Legend, Loretta Lynn, The Naked Boys, Anne Murray and others. Spotted either onstage, in the audience or at the after-party were Joan Jett, Natasha Bedingfield, Paul Shaffer, Peter Asher, Danny Aiello, Phil Ramone, Russ Teitelman, and other industry greats.

A few days later, we ended up at the Bitter End at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards to induct the 2008 Songwriters Guild of America Abe Olman winner Galia Arad. It was a whirlwind of events, and a great time was had by all. Contacts made, drinks drunk, and some great fun and entertainment was had by all.
