Sen. Wyden should allow indie creators to sue for $ they're owed

Democratic senator, Oregon

Sen. Ron Wyden (D. OR) is preventing indie songwriters from having a right to sue in a copyright small claims court. The SGA is asking all members and indie creators to call Senator Ron Wyden (202-224-5244) and demand he lift his opposition to a Senate vote on the Copyright Alternative in Small-Claims Enforcement (CASE) Act.

The CASE Act was passed nearly unanimously in The House of Representatives (410-6). A similar vote in the Senate would mean songwriters and other indie creators could gain affordable protection for their work. As the law stands now, the cost of bringing a lawsuit for copyright infringement is around $250K or more with damages capped at around $150K. With the passage of the CASE Act, songwriters and other small creators will be able to sue in small claims copyright court at little to no cost for the suit.

Wyden is the only Senator blocking a Senate vote on the CASE Act. The Act would help not only songwriters but all independent creators whose work is used without permission or payment.
